Sleeping Giant Brewing Company Utilizes
Training Funds to Help grow their Business
Sleeping Giant Brewing Company has its eye on the future. With a recent move to a new larger facility on MacDonnell Street, this local business is positioning itself to meet the ever-increasing demand of a sophisticated craft beer market. Plans for continued growth also include increased production through automation. Sleeping Giant Brewery’s purchase of the Can-I-Bus Depalletizer was the first step in this process.
Assistant General Manager, Kevin Brewer, describes the importance of purchasing this new equipment: “This tool will allow us to be more efficient and allow less opportunity for error…For the last year and a half, tasks on the production line were 100% labour intensive….It’s a non-stop job that always needs to be done. It is extremely repetitive. Now these tasks can be done automatically.”
The equipment itself was not the business’s only expense. Training existing staff members to operate the equipment safely and efficiently was essential to the growth plan. Staff also needed to understand how to re-configure this piece of equipment to work with future upgrades. The training required was extensive. Kevin Brewer applied for a Canada-Ontario Job Grant to help offset the cost of bringing in a representative from the manufacturer to train staff on-site at the brewery. YES Employment Services assisted Sleeping Giant Brewing Company with their COJG application. The business secured funding for six employees to receive the training. The training took place on-site at the brewery from Monday January 23rd to Wednesday January 25th, 2017.
Now staff members can shift their focus from repetitive tasks, to building expertise in other aspects of the business like packaging, manufacturing and quality control. The result is a more professional, industry-centred staff who will be full participants in helping the business grow.

COJG provides direct financial support to individual employers who wish to purchase training for their employees. It is available to small, medium and large businesses with a plan to deliver short-term training to existing and new employees, and will:
- Provide up to $10,000 in government support per person for training costs.
- Require employers to contribute one-third of the total costs. There will be additional flexibility for small businesses to provide an in-kind contribution towards their share of the costs.
- Training must be delivered by an eligible, third party trainer
