Sean Kohanski (left) welcomes Gary Wolch (right) to the Thunder Bay Insulations Ltd. team.
Thunder Bay Insulations Ltd. was looking for someone to take on a professional role to assist with insulation projects and estimates. Sean Kohanski and his father, Mike, run the family-owned business. Sean was looking forward to taking on more responsibility for the business as his father moved into semi-retirement, and he was going to need help. Jamie Jorgenson from Academy of Learning had recently met with Sean about training options and she knew he was looking for someone to take on a key role in the business. She suggested that Sean contact Jack Cleverdon at YES to help with his recruiting. Sean had tried to recruit professional candidates previously with no success. Jack knew he could help. He sat down with Sean to discuss the needs and direction of the business. There were three experienced YES clients who Jack recommended for an interview. They all had the professional qualifications to take on the role, but one stood out for Sean.
Gary was a successful and experienced Estimator/Project Manager and Safety Manager. He had years of experience working in the construction industry and he enjoyed the work. When his job came to an end, he wanted to continue working in the field, but he was having difficulty securing a position and salary commensurate with his skills and experience. He decided to visit YES for assistance. Through the Employment Service program, we helped him develop a professional resume and explore career options. When the position at Thunder Bay Insulations Ltd. came up, Gary was ready for the interview. He was thrilled when Sean offered him the position. “I didn’t have any direct experience with insulation projects, so there was definitely a learning curve, but it’s turning out to be a great fit for me,” Gary says, now 4 weeks into the job. Sean agrees: “He’s been in the construction business for years. He’s got good contacts, I’ve got good contacts. If we put our heads together we can do something great here.”
