Building Community Partnerships

As a YES customer, trainer, and now a Mining Camp Manager, Karen Routly is a valued community partner. Karen was born in Canada but her family moved to Germany when she was in her early teens. While in Europe, Karen gained extensive experience, skills and knowledge in the tourism and fine dining industries. In 2005 Karen returned to Canada where she continued to work in the field. In 2014 she managed a Northwestern Ontario resort for 5 months and moved to Thunder Bay to be closer to the job she would resume the following Spring. When she didn’t get called back to manage the resort, Karen found herself unemployed for the first time in her career. She had education, highly specialized training and experience, but she was having difficulty finding her niche in the local labour market. This is when Karen’s connection with YES began.
Karen met with YES Employment Counsellor, Leanne Klassen, who helped her create a resume, practice her interview skills and build her networking skills. She interviewed for a front desk position, but was hoping for something that would match her area of specialty more closely. Then Leanne found a unique opportunity and suggested that Karen apply. Amik Catering was looking for a camp manager. The company has the catering and cleaning contract for the Lac Des Iles mining camp. The position was just what Karen was looking for. Her interview preparation paid off and after securing a second interview, Karen was offered the position.
Part of Karen’s role is to ensure that there is a full complement of staff at the mine to fulfill Amik Catering’s contract for both the cooking and cleaning at the mine site. It’s a challenging and unique position. Individuals need to be suitable for camp life. They have to pass a drug test and they need to be prepared to remain on site for the entire shift schedule (7 days on site, 7 days off or 14 days on site, 7 days off depending on the position). Karen works with YES Job Developer, Matt Villella, who assists with recruitment and pre-screening. Positions are posted on the YES Job Bank and we host information sessions for interested candidates so that Karen can let applicants know about the unique requirements of the job. Following the session, she conducts interviews at YES with candidates who pass the pre-screening requirements. The process has helped Karen hire seven workers so far.
Karen expressed her gratitude to YES for their help and support, by offering to help out other YES customers in return. She developed and now delivers a free Professional Server Training course periodically at YES, utilizing the European world class training she received in Germany. We thank Karen for giving back to the community and for her continued partnership with YES!

Holiday Hamper Winners
Our Holiday Hampers were overflowing this year thanks to the generosity of YES management and staff. Clients filled out ballots throughout the month of December which resulted in a very large number of client entries in our ballot boxes. The lucky winner of our Thunder Bay hamper was Colleen (left). Howard won the hamper at our Nipigon office and his family (pictured right) came to pick up the hamper. We hope you enjoyed your holiday goodies!
YES Staff Volunteers at Shelter House
YES Employment Staff had a great afternoon preparing and serving lunch for customers at Shelter House Thunder Bay on Wednesday December 28th. Kitchen Coordinator Andrew and his helper Larren were awesome to work with. We are all looking forward to volunteering again!
